Orchestra and Wind Ensemble rehearsals and concerts will take place at NEC.

Audition Requirements for new students

  • Please read the guidelines above BEFORE recording your audition video.

  • Two contrasting solos (different composers, different styles). Please play unaccompanied even if you are playing a sonata or a concerto. The total playing time for both solo pieces should be approximately 5 minutes TOTAL - approximately 2.5 minutes each. Therefore, do not take any repeats and you may record less than a full movement (for example, the exposition of a concerto movement).

  • The orchestra excerpts in their entirety in any order you wish. Flutists and woodwind players playing auxiliary instruments, please play the auxiliary instrument excerpts last. (Piccolo is required for flutists, all other auxiliary instruments are optional. Please let us know if you do not have access to a piccolo.)

Audition Requirements for returning students

  • Please read the guidelines above BEFORE recording your audition video.
  • If you were a student in a degree or diploma program at NEC during the 2019/2020 school year, you are a returning student even if you will be in a new program in 2020/2021.
  • Please prepare only the orchestral excerpts for your instrument. You are not required to play any solo works for this audition.
  • If you are a year 5 Harvard/NEC student, you need to prepare two short solo movements as described in new student requirements above. Only exception is if you've previously played an audition for Mr. Wolff during your undergraduate years.
